MUZAFFARPUR AND ITS ISLAMIC HERITAGE

Muzaffarpur is a famous smart city in Tirhut division of Northern Bihar. Vaishali, a world famous archeological site and known for its ancient democratic government when it was rarity, is not far from this headquarter of Tirhut division. Muzaffarpur has also been a center of Islamic heritage and civilization.

The very nomenclature of this settlement suggests its connection to Muslims. Muzaffar is an Arabic word signifying a person who wins and conquers and Khan is a title of Mongolian and Central Asian origin, meaning “leader,” “ruler,” or “noble.” Since Muzaffarpur was founded by Muzaffar Khan, it came to be known as Muzaffarpur.

Muzaffar Khan was a revenue officer under the British, who established a town at the bank of Budhi Gandak.

As regards Islamic heritage in the city of Muzaffarpur, there are a number of Islamic religious sites – mosques, madrasa, Dargah, graveyards, heritage buildings, Islamic institutions, organizations and business establishments and others.
Mosques –
There are a number of mosques, a symbol of Islamic heritage in Muzaffarpur city such as, Jama Masjid in Company Bagh, many mosques in Mithanpura, Chandwara, Maripur, Brahampur and Damodarpur etc.

Islamic Institutions – As regards Islamic institutions as Islamic heritage in Muzaffarpur, Jamiul Uloom, Pakki Sarai, Darut Takmil, Qurban Road, Mahammadpur Kazi, Chandwara, 842001 Islamic Arabic College Brahmapura, Teghiya Educational Complex, Madarsa Rd, Shrirampuri, Maripur, Bhagwanpur, Bihar 842001, Madrasa Bibi Sughra, AT DATA KAMBAL SHAH MAZAR, Muzaffarpur, Bihar 842001, Madrasa Almahadul Islami Hifzul Quran, Madhopur Rd, Madhopur, Bihar 842002 and others.

We can include the Bihar Scientific Society in Islamic heritage of this city as well. It was established by Syed Imdad Ali in 1868. Bihar Scientific society in association with Bhumihar Brahmin Sabha established a college in 1899, namely Langat Singh College. Launching Akhbarul Akhyar also goes to the credit of this society.
