Gulzar Azmi

Gulzar Azmi

Gulzar Azmi a community leader of Jamiat-e- Ulema-e-Hind based in Mumbai is considered a role model in the community service. One year has passed since he left us on 20th August, 2023, but his legacy in rescuing Indian Muslim youth implicated in false cases must be remembered. His selfless service for the community living in Maharashtra is a proud example of social service.

Hailing from the district of Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh he joined Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Hind in 1954CE and remained an active and respected activist of this political and religious organization headed by the uncle and nephew i.e. Maulana Arshad Madani and Maulana Mahmood Madanai.

A humble man Gulzar Azmi led a very simple life in a chawl in Bhindi Bazar of Mumbai with his family and children. An interesting anecdote has been told by the Senior Journalist Masoom Mordabadi in his post on his first death anniversary. He narrates:

It happened only two weeks ago from his demise. Coming to Mumbai I made first call to Gulzar (Azmi) Bhai. He received the phone in the very first ring and asked ‘Masoom, where are you.’ I told: This very night I have come to your megacity and he asked in friendly vein, ‘Please come.’ But I could not meet him because of tight schedule and disconnected phone with promise of tomorrow.

Next day Farooq Syed ‘Editor of the magazine Gul Booote’ came to the hotel with his Scooty and I went with him to Gulzar Brother. When I asked him about his daily routine he replied. This office (office of Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Hind near Bhindi Bazar) is my home also. He added indicating to a small bench that I sleep on this very bench in the night. What an example of simplicity!

He had devoted himself for the cause of the community. He spent his later life in providing legal aid to the Muslim young men implicated in the false cases of terrorism. He succeeded in saving a number of innocent Muslim youth even from death sentence. May God Bestow upon him His Blessings in Paradise! (Hamid Siddiqui)
