I, Akhtar Nazmi, belong to Allahabad; however, still Allahabad does not know about it. My ancestors kept on shifting to various places settling at one place or another making entire world their abode and journey is going on:
राह हमवार नहीं कोई, मगर जारी है,
मेरे तख्लिकी तसव्वुर का सफ़र जारी है,
Passing via Amravati of Maharashtra and Bhopal of Madhya Pradesh I arrived at Gwalior for the sake of employment after I was appointed as Professor and Head of the Urdu Department in the Government Kamla Raja Girls College, Gwalior in 1968 and I was retired from the government service in 1992.
My (Akhtar Nazmi) companion in happiness and sorrow is Nashat Akhtar. My sons are Suhail, Sameer, Faiz, Firoz and Rizwan. My grandson is Tamseel Qadri, whose mom is my daughter in law Raihana Suhail.
I embarked on the journey of poesy from the very period of studentship. When Janab Niyaz Fatehpuri invited poets in 1954 to experiment poetry on “फिर उसके बाद चिरागों में रौशनी न रही”, I sent a ghazal of five couplets, whose one couplet:
“किसी के रुए मुनव्वर को देखने के लिए,
उठी निगाह मगर देर तक उठी न रही”
Was included and appreciated, which encouraged me to look forward to the realm of imagination, whose first milestone was Nagpur in 1952.
The poems from the beginning till 1970 have been published in various journals, but I have not given them a place in my poetry collections. (a) “Shab Reze” (2) “Khwabon Ka Hibas” (3) “Kis Taraf Kaisi Hawa Hai” include the works of 1970 and thereafter. Other poems, Quartets, verses and other genres are in the custody of newspapers, magazines and manuscripts. They have not yet been published in book form.
The aforesaid is the summary of main points narrated by Dr Akhtar Nazmi in his poetry collection “Sawa Neze Pe Suraj”. This essay of his is dated 27th of July, 1994 and Dr Akhtar Nazmi left this world for heavenly abode in the year 1997 as per Rekhta web portal, which also hosts his four books namely Sawa Neze Pe Suraj, Shab Reze, Meer Syed Ali Ghamgeen Dehlawi and Khwabon Ka Hisab.
Some of his couplets that garnered attention are as per below:
वो ज़हर देता तो सब की निगह में आ जाता
सो ये किया कि मुझे वक़्त पे दवाएँ न दीं
अब नहीं लौट के आने वाला
घर खुला छोड़ के जाने वाला
मिरी तरफ़ से तो टूटा नहीं कोई रिश्ता
किसी ने तोड़ दिया ए’तिबार टूट गया
नाव काग़ज़ की छोड़ दी मैं ने
अब समुंदर की ज़िम्मेदारी है
