BAKRA EID AND BENGAL

Bakra Eid

Bakra Eid is the local name given to the formal name of an Islamic festival Eid ul-Azha, one of the two festivals encouraged by the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) to be celebrated. Meaning the festival of sacrifice the word Eid is a derivative of the linguistic root Awdah (Return) and the word Adhha means morning brightness and since the rituals of sacrifice are perfumed in the morning hours, it fell within the semantic field of the morning hours signifying to the animal sacrifice.

The recent victory of BJP in the West Bengal has not brought any good tidings for the Muslims in general and those persons being termed as the intruders from Bangladesh. The State Government of West Bengal has imposed a ban on public slaughterhouses. According to the new rules, the slaughter of animals may be carried out only in municipal slaughterhouses or in slaughterhouses designated by the local administration. West Bengal Animal Slaughter Control Act, 1950 has been enforced issuing fresh public notices and directives reiterating strict rules. No cattle or buffalo slaughter is allowed without an official fitness certificate from authorities. Public/open slaughter is restricted — it must occur only in authorized government-designated slaughterhouses. Plans for action against illegal slaughterhouses, unlicensed cattle markets, cattle smuggling networks, and related illegal meat trade align with broader promises on law and order, border security, and ending “syndicate” activities. Violations can attract penalties including fines and jail terms. The moves cite existing laws and past Calcutta High Court orders. Officials emphasize protecting milch/draught cattle and regulating livestock trade. Inspections and monitoring are expected to intensify in the run-up to Eid. When TMC was in power, BJP (as opposition) frequently criticized “rivers of blood” on Kolkata streets after Eid due to open animal sacrifices, accusing the Mamata Banerjee government of appeasement and poor civic management. They shared videos and highlighted hygiene/public safety issues. BJP leaders, including state unit chief Sukanta Majumdar, raised these issues prominently after previous Eid celebrations. These recent steps reflect the BJP government’s implementation of long-standing positions on cattle protection and regulated slaughter, now possible with state power. The measures apply to religious sacrifices but emphasize legal compliance rather than a blanket ban on Bakra Eid practices (goat sacrifice, for instance, is generally less restricted than cattle).
