Urdu Hai Jiska NAAM

Urdu

Urdu is my mother tongue? perhaps not, Vajjika? It may be, however, Urdu has been engrained so much into my perception, learning, teaching and life that I could not love any language as I love Urdu and then Arabic.

Urdu was born and began growing in the same period when English started its life journey in England. English has become the lingua franca of the world and Urdu is being discarded and displaced in its own country and the place of origin and unfortunately even in Pakistan, where it is the national language, the majority of the population has their own mother tongue.

This is the harsh reality that the laws of the survival of the fittest and natural selection and evolution do apply to the languages as well. Hebrew language was dead but it has become living language again. Sanskrit is being revived by the nationalist Indian Government and the conservationists of the country. However, Urdu is ailing and facing animosity by overwhelming population of its nation and the community.

What would be the fate of this tongue? I am not going to dive in this debate. I want only to prove my love, passion, admiration and impressions I have for this lovely and smart language and its literate, that is the language of Ghalib, Iqbal, Meer, Dagh, Josh, Sahir, Majaz, Meenai, Faiz, Faraz, Parveen Shakir, Ada Jafri, Manto, Bedi, Qurratul Ain, Chughtai, Kaifi, Hasrat, Shakeel and numerous others.

Almost every Urdu major poet and fiction writer wanted his creations to be published in the international language English, so I wish to render the masterpieces of Urdu literature into English within the proper backdrop and background. Philosophy of life as envisioned by Ghalib, Islamic renaissance dreamed by Iqbal, romantic ideals craved by Faiz and Majaz, feminist sensibility of Parveen, Shakir and critical insights of Urdu critics including other aspects would be the main interests of my writing endeavors.
