Dasna – A Muslim Majority Town

Dasna Jail Painting

Dasna is a Muslim majority town in the Ghaziabad District of the State of Uttar Pradesh. This Qasba has become one of the hot spots near the National Capital Delhi. Lying just on both the sides of eight lane National Highway 24 (9) only 10 km away from the district headquarter Ghaziabad is famous for Devi Mandir, whose caretaker Shri Yati Narsinghanand has been in headlines for his firebrand statements and speeches. Although this ancient settlement is dominantly populated by Muslims, the boards prohibiting Muslim entry are installed outside the temple.

When I had come to Delhi, one case of honor killing was on every tongue, wherein the parents have been tried for murdering their alone teen child and after conviction they have spent some years in Dasna jail proving to good persons and deserving emission of jail terms.

One anecdote is narrated by the inhabitants of this town as to its baptism that in ancient times a religious man after having bath in the Ganges at nearby Gadhmukteshwar passed the place liking the same, so while he was erecting his abode here, some laborers were bit (Dasna) by snakes entailing the name of Dasna to this township in Ghaziabad district.

Nagar Panchayat of Dasna has about 80 percent Muslim population of total around 35 thousand. Dozens of mosques, many Islamic institutions and secular establishments, a railway station and mazars are located here. A lot of persons from this place commute to Noida and some parts of Delhi for work. Being on a highway and one of the closest settlements to Ghaziabad, Noida and Delhi, real estate sector is booming here and indeed, this is a good place for Muslims to invest and live realizing their dreams and living Islamic way of life.

Any write up on Dasna without mentioning Shri Yati Narsinghanand Ji would be incomplete. I have watched one of his recent proclamations in video in which he was declaring that if any one raises eyes to his followers, he would eat him up. He considers himself to be the true protector of Sanatan Dharma. (Hamid Siddiqui)
