Haaye – Haaye is a rhyme scheme (Radif) used by the greatest Urdu poet, Ghalib in one of his ghazals, in which he laments and expresses Haaye – Haaye, alas, alas in English. Let us see what the concerns are which have concerned Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib.
दर्द से मेरे है तुझको बेक़रारी हाय हाय,
क्या हुई ज़ालिम तेरी ग़फलत शेआरी हाय हाय,
The beloved in Urdu poetry has normally been portrayed as brute without mercy and s/he pains the lover, so when the beloved of the poet is restless due to agony of the composer of poesy, he spontaneously cannot control himself from speaking out alas, alas.
तेरे दिल में गर न था, आशोबे ग़म का हौसला
तुने फिर क्यों की थी, मेरी ग़मग़ुसारी हाय हाय
The true lover cannot see his beloved in pain, even if her pain is the result of the sorrows of the lover. When the honey of the poet is restless, he is also concerned and asks the respective person not to be restless on his agonies.
उम्र भर का तुने पैमाने वफा बांधा तो क्या,
उम्र को भी तो नही है पायेदारी हाय, हाय
Ghalib is a philosophical poet as well. He is happy that his beloved has given assurances for the whole life, however the very life is uncertain and a man can die within a moment.
शर्मे रुस्वाई से जा छुपना निक़ाबे खाक में
खत्म है उल्फत की तुझ पे परदादारी हाय हाय
The beloved of the poet has concealed herself inside the veil of the soil. The poet says that this is the highest civility of an affection a person can accord.
In all the aforesaid stanzas Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib has used the Radif Haaye – Haaye to heighten his wonder and surprise on the unique manifestations of love and affection that is perceived by an individual individually. (Hamid Siddiqui)
