Fort of Budaun was a marvelous fort in ancient time, whose architecture was a fine specimen of Indian Engineering of the bygone era. Historians are not unanimous when the fort was erected. Some of them say that the founder of this castle was Raja Buddha and others are of the opinion that the year of its construction is 900 CE. However, the rise of the rule of Shankar Acharya had dimmed the glory of the king Buddha and no structure can be named after Buddha in this period. There were three gates to the Fort of Budaun. The gate to the south was famous in the name of Sooth Gate. The passage of time has ravaged it leaving not its original features. Its attractions have gone away. Now police outpost is built on its ruined wall in one side, in front of which pucca minaret in parts still exists, reminding us their splendor in the past. There is an Islamic Mausoleum also inside it. Another gate of the Fort of Budaun in the east is called Mandahi Gate, but now there is no trace of it. There is the market of confectioners outside the Gate. The third gate in the north was known as Bahatol Gate where the ruins of the fort are still in sight. Like Sooth Gate, here also is found the police outpost.
(Note: This description of Budaun Fort is found in a booklet authored by the polymath of the legendary land Budaun, Nizami Budauni ‘Budaun Past and Present’ (Published about one century ago). This booklet contains highly valuable information regarding Budaun for the persons associated to the District and the region so I (Hamid Siddiqui, Director of Muslims of India Portal) decided to render it in English so that Budauni Sahiban and others could know how the glorious city and the area of Budaun was, that produced so many geniuses in the past and present.)
