THE MOSQUE: UROOSA ARSHI, KOLKATA

Uroosa Arshi

Uroosa Arshi has composed a moving piece of poem, titled the Mosque. I have read thousands of poems and literacy compositions but never felt a pressing desire to write anything on them. But when I got a glance the poem by Uroosa Arshi on the facebook just two days after “Pran Pratishtha” mega function at Ayodhya in the wake of Ram Mandir inauguration on 22nd of June, 2024 just before 2024 Parliamentary Election, here is the gist of the poem very relevant indeed.

मिट गई मस्जिद मगर उसकी जगह बाक़ी रही। सब दलायल हेच ठहरे आस्था बाक़ी रही।
The mosque was demolished but its surface of land remained.  All evidences were held irrelevant but faith prevailed.

A superb sarcasm and satire on the circumstances surrounding the issue of faith of which both the mosque of Babri and Ram Mandir are manifestations is enshrined in this starting couplet echoing the verdict of the Apex Court of India, which delivered its judgment on evidences and proof but the faith of the majority of the nation, where Muslims are a minority.  I appreciate this couplet penned by Uroosa Arshi.

हाकिमे दौराँ का सुनकर इकतरफा फैसला। क़ौमे मुस्लिम के दिलों में इल्तेजा बाक़ी रही।
The Muslim Community hearing the decree of the ruling party,  They could do nothing but had evocation of justice

Uroosa Arshi in this couplet resolutely expresses her view that the decision of the judiciary in the case of the Mosque was not based on material evidence and for the purposes known to all and the reasons evident, the order was passed in favor of the Majority Community on the cost of the parameters of law and justice.

In other couplets, the poetess sheds light on other dimensions of the controversy of the mosque and temple that the title right case was not decided as per the law of the land depriving the title holders of their rights, which shook the faith of the people in the constitution of the country. Uroosa Arshi does not lose faith as she believes in divine justice and the Day of Judgment when guilty would be punished and virtue shall be rewarded.

In the ending two lines, Uroosa Arshi proclaims that the enemy of Islam does not have any future and the sole thing to remain is the eternal entity that sustains the universe.
