Ramazan is a holy month in Islam, in which the persons adhering to Islam perform a special duty of fasting from dawn to sunset. Ramazan is meant to discipline a person in certain vital qualities required to face the harsh realities of human existence, refraining from eating, smoking, drinking and from other pleasurable activities. It purifies the soul and brings the individual closer to Allah (SWT). Ramazan culminates in the most important Islamic Festival of Idul-Fitr.
In this post we are highlighting the Quranic verses pertaining to Ramazan and Fasting.
“O you who have believed, fasting is decreed upon you as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous” — Surat Al-Baqarah 2:183
From in this holy verse, we come to know that fasting has been prevalent in all cultures and which has purifying power for soul and it is compulsory obligation for all Muslims.
“…But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.” — Surat Al-Baqarah 2:184
“…But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.” — Surat Al-Baqarah 2:184
It is natural for an individual to think about benefits as per science and medical discoveries apart from its blessing to be conferred by the Almighty Allah (SWT). There is strong medical evidence that fasting has numerous benefits in terms of human philology and brain functioning.
“The month of Ramazan is a month in which was revealed the Qur’an, which is guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.” — Surat Al-Baqarah 2:185
Ramazan is also a month in which the Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). This book of guidance i.e. Quran is the ultimate treasure trove on how to live life as a good Muslim.
“Allah is with those who restrain themselves.” — Quran 16: 128
Fasting teaches restraint; the ability to control worldly desires and to spend time in prayer and meditation. Fasting is a noble act that is much beloved by Allah (SWT).
“Allah has made Laylat al-Qadr in this month, which is better than a thousand months, as Allah says…The Night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months. Therein descend the angels and the Rooh [Jibreel (Gabriel)] by Allah’s Permission with all Decrees, there is peace until the appearance of dawn.” — Al-Qadar 97:1-5
Lailat-ul-Qadr is the prized jewel of Ramazan. This night carries more blessings than a thousand months. Muslims must spend this night in prayer and meditation, make dua and to seek forgiveness for past sins. There is salvation in this night, a chance to cleanse all of sins and reborn again.
Ramadan is a gift from Allah (SWT); an opportunity for Muslims to capitalize on and earn His blessings and a way to seek salvation and forgiveness. We should all make the most of it. Let’s all spend the Ramazan in purifying soul, coming closer to the Almighty Allah, prayers, meditations and others.
